SWAMI PUSHKARINI

There is a large water tank in the temple premises, adjacent to the Sri Venkateswara temple, called as Swami Pushkarini. On the western bank of the Swami Pushkarini is the Sri Varahaswami temple, while on its southern bank is the Sri Venkateswara temple. It is said that this Pushkarini was originally based in Vaikuntam and belonged to Lord Vishnu. It was set on Earth by Garuda, for the sport of Sri Venkateswara. The ‘mukkoti’ of Swami Pushkarini (the merging of over three crore teertham in Swami Pushkarini) occurs on Mukkoti Dwadasi (the twelfth day of the fortnight of Dhanur Masa). Therefore, it is believed that bathing in the Swami Pushkarini on this day, is equivalent to bathing in the holy river, Ganges. Hence lakhs of Pilgrims bathe here before entering the main temple. It is said that Lord Varaha was residing over the Sheshachalam much before Sri Venkateshwara. It was Lord Varaha who granted space for Sri Venkateshwara to live on Sheshachalam and thus His temple is visited first before visiting that of Lord Venkateshwara.

The wooden-float festival of Lord Sri Venkateswara in the month of February/March and Avabhrudha snanam or Chakra snanam during Brahmotsavam takes place in the Swami Pushkarini
